Mohammed Assaf returns with “3al Hillah,” a vibrant new release celebrating the beauty of the Arab woman through poetic lyrics and vivid imagery drawn from Arab culture, from kohl, horses, and cardamom to the moon and the sea, all set against the rhythmic pulse of Arab folk music.
Written by Ahmed Essam, composed by El Shab Samer, arranged by Fadi Jiji, and released by Platinum Records, 3al Hillah” draws from the rhythms of Arab folk and Dabke, pairing infectious refrains with a strong sense of movement and interaction. The result is unmistakably Assaf: Grounded in the folk traditions that have shaped his identity, while carrying a fresh, contemporary edge.
That energy extends to the music video, filmed at a horse farm in Jordan. Directed by Raafat Al-Tabakhi, the video is set against an equestrian backdrop that complements the song’s lyrics and brings its celebration of Arab culture to life with a distinctly cinematic edge.
Assaf says:
“3al Hillah” comes from the folk music I grew up with and the sounds that have always influenced me. The title is inspired by the familiar chant “3al Hillah, El Hilla,” often heard in traditional songs and Dabke. It is less about a literal meaning than the feeling it creates — energy, joy, celebration, and that instant connection between the singer and the audience.
With “3al Hillah,” I wanted to take something deeply familiar and give it a new voice — keeping its spirit alive while making it feel natural and relevant to audiences today, across the Arab world and beyond.
Alongside the release of “3al Hillah,” Mohammed Assaf continues his U.S. tour, taking the song to audiences across a series of live performances. A portion of the tour’s proceeds will be donated to charitable organizations supporting people in Gaza.
“3al Hillah” is available now across major streaming platforms, with the official music video streaming on Platinum Records’ YouTube channel.
